Dodge Ram diesel pickup trucks first started using the Cummins engine in 1989. At the time, it was a 5.9-liter six-cylinder 12V turbo with 160 horsepower. This engine was on an elevated level compared to the lessor diesel engines in Ford and Chevrolet as it was turbocharged and direct-injected.
Since originally being adopted by Ram, with the advancements in technology along with innovation, even greater improvements with the injection system, cylinder heads and turbos were made within the Cummins engine during the next 20-years. However, during that time frame, the displacement was not altered as they continued with the 5.9L engine.
But then, in 2007 Cummins redesigned the engine displacement with an increase to 6.7L. This new Cummins engine featured a variable geometry turbocharger making it much more powerful with over double the horsepower at 350 while reducing the noise by half! This incredible, more powerful yet quieter Cummins engine at 6.7L is the same engine over 10 years later. Why mess with near perfection, right?
For 30 years and counting, the Cummins diesel engine has been a main feature in Dodge Ram's heavy-duty diesel truck line-making it a favorite among many owners and buyers. Likely, this is one of the main reasons you have purchased or are considering purchasing a Ram as your preferred fleet or personal vehicle.
It is imperative that an owner of a Ram with the Cummins diesel engine adhere perfectly to the manufacturer's maintenance schedule. If you decide to alter the schedule at all in the harsh weather conditions while driving on the streets of Rochester, MN, the alteration must be in seeking service sooner than the intervals set forth rather than later. Remember, manufacturers, give parameters based on "normal driving" and "normal climate conditions. It is up to the Cummin's engine owner to adjust based on any extremes.
