Diesel truck and engine repair

March 8, 2018

Cost of diesel truck and engine repair and maintenance are not inexpensive and there are definitely perks to owning a diesel truck in Rochester, MN

What brand of diesel truck do you own? How much did you pay for it and what is the cost to maintain and repair your diesel truck? Maybe you don’t have a diesel truck yet but are looking to purchase one. What might be some problems when buying a used diesel truck and what should you look for?

If you own or are considering purchasing a diesel truck, some of your reasons will likely include durability, torque and towing power. Diesel engines are robust and reliable—for this reason they power many vehicles on the roadways in Rochester, MN and are becoming more popular.

Is there a make and model diesel truck that you prefer? Are Ford, Dodge or Chevrolet among your favorites for diesel trucks? And have you researched their popular engines – Power Stroke, Duramax or Cummins? These engines are built to withstand extremes that would leave gas engines smoking and struggling to perform even at a fraction of the power. Still, diesel engines are not perfect. They are more expensive at the initial buy and also more expensive to maintain and repair. But do the benefits outweigh the cost of diesel engines in your mind? Even after expensive repairs, the longevity of diesel engines may entice you to stick with your decision to drive a diesel truck.

As you know, diesel engines are always evolving. And there is much to consider when purchasing a new or used diesel truck. Recently we repaired and earlier model Powerstroke 6.0 liter engine – 2004. The vehicle originally presented with a no start issue requiring the high pressure oil pump replacement. Once the high-pressure oil pump was replaced and taken for a final test drive, it began overheating. Upon further assessment and diagnostics of the diesel engine, it was found that the cylinder heads and gaskets had failed. This is common for Ford diesel engines prior to Ford fixing the issues on the later model Ford Powerstroke engines. Common symptoms of cylinder head problems are: overheating, running rough, no start, smoking and/or no boost or power.

The cylinder head and gasket failure found in Ford diesel trucks are not as common in other diesel engines like the Duramax or Cummins. So if you are looking for a diesel truck, this is something to consider in you are thinking of purchasing a Ford Powerstroke. That being said, our customer is thrilled with the power his truck has after the repairs were made and he expects to have it for a long time to come.
